Resource Engineering Centre

                                                                                               * General information *

*  The former Environmental Research Division at MERI has been renamed as Remote Sensing and Geo-informatics Division from 2005. Before       2005, a cell of few engineers was working on R.S. Technology, since 1992. This cell was merged in newly formed division. From 1stApril 2015       two divisions ‘Remote Sensing and Geo-informatics Division’ and ‘Reservoir Sedimentation Survey Division’ were merged and formed a division     named as Resource Engineering Center at Nashik.

* Resources Engineering Centre mainly works on advanced techniques such as Remote Sensing, Global Positioning System, Differential Global      Positioning System and Geographic Information System, and applies the same for Sedimentation assessment of reservoir under WRD and         works awarded by CWC, TATA, MIDC, MAHAGENCO, BMC, etc, Capacity assessment of reservoirs, Crop mapping (sugarcane, banana,          grape),Standing crop mapping for a particular season, Land Use Land Cover mapping, , Hydro cover mapping etc.

* ACTIVITIES *

        1. Assessment of reservoir sedimentation by SRS
        2. Sugarcane crop mapping.

        3. Banana crop mapping.
        4.Grape crop mapping.

        5. Green cover mapping
        6. Land use land cover mapping study.
        7. Hydro cover mapping study.
        8. Urbanization in command area of Major Projects
        9. Capacity assessment of reservoir by DGPS
     10. Survey of canal and command by DGPS

     11. Validation of Benchmarks/TBM/PBM by DGPS
     12. Training to WRD officers
     13. Updating information on Bhuvan web portal
     14.  Presentation of papers in conferences.
     15. Consultancy Works

     16.Knowledge transfer programme for UG/PG/PhD Enginering students.

         Methodology

          The methodology for estimation of live capacity of reservoir using remote sensing consists of following major task-

(1) Digital data base creation
(2) Estimation of water spread area
(3) Ground truth collection and verification.
(3) Calculation of reservoir capacity
(4) Comparison of result with previous surveys
(5) Estimation of live capacity loss due to sedimentation.

* TRAINING
1. Training is being imparted to water resources department and public works department engineers through induction training and in service training.
2. Induction training contains 5 days training session of introduction to remote sensing, application of remote sensing in reservoir sedimentation. Application of remote sensing in crop mapping, browsing and ordering of satellite images on ISRO web site, introduction to GPS and GPS pathfinder office software and terra sync software, how to create data dictionary, introduction to DGPS, TBS software, mapping of DGPS data, GPS and DGPs hands on etc.
3. A national level training programmed  was planned in the year 2020-21 on the special request of Telangana state engineering research lab (TSERL) and Gujarat water resources department (GWRD). This training will be conducted on the topic "Remote sensing and DGPS technology".
