Highway Research Division

  1. General information

The   Department was created in 1969 to conduct research on highway related topics.  Problems of Public works departments of Maharashtra are solved through this division. In this division various problems related bridge ,Roads of public works department are solved and test work done.

 

  1. ACTIVITIES
  • 1)  Design of new roads.
  • 2) Various problems suggested by P. W. D. Maharashtra, regarding Roads,  different   Research Schemes for  Highways ,  are being handled by this division.
  • 3) Pavement design for new & existing roads.
  • 4)  Investigation  & suggesting  remedial  measures for road works.
  • 5) Determination of roughness index for roads by automatic road unevenness recorder(ARUR)
  • 6)  Studying new techniques by using  locally available material for road  construction       
  • 7) Various tests related to road   materials. (Californiya Bearing Ratio, Soil, Aggregate    
  • 8) Non Distructive test (Non Destructive test and core testing)
  • Schmid hammer test To detect compressive strength of building without destructing columns or beams.

 This test is used to design new roads.

    

Field Test:

  1. ARUR Test

           For this test the roughness of various roads in whole of maharahstra is done by  Car Axle Mounted ARUR Machine. Testing is done on site only. for test vehicle speed is 30 kmph. The vehicle is driven in each lane. The time to go to the actual test site may vary depending on the test site. Approx 200 km in a day.Taking road test and analysis may take up to 2 dyas.

 

  1. Benkelman Beam Test.

This test is done by going to the actual road site to determine the additional surface thickness to be given for reinforcement the existing roads. In one day 2-3 km road length was tested.same time soil samples were also taken and tested in labortay for  Moisture Content & Plasticity Index. The field information required for the concept of test. After that secton is analyzed

3)Non Destructive test (Schmidt hammer test) 

This test is carried out to detect compressive strength of building component without destructing columns or beams. (IS 13311 part 2nd 1992)
